In-Center versus In-Home Physical Therapy

Truth is, both are essential for successful medical rehabilitation.

Bad knees, bad hips, bad back. These are just a few of the common complaints that lead people to physical therapy (PT), in search of relief. Are you feeling out of balance? Are you suffering from strains or sprains? Are you experiencing pain in your neck?

The pandemic and the subsequent years have seen a renewed emphasis on in-home care delivery within the industry. This includes physical therapy treatment.

The greatest benefit of this system is its convenience. You can stay at home and conduct sessions from your smartphone or computer. If you’re technology savvy, a virtual care delivery model might be appealing.

How can you recover from an injury or illness at home? In-home care can help you get back on your feet.

However, in-person rehabilitation at physical therapy centers can also be done.

In-center patients will have one-on-one access to clinical specialists who can evaluate their movement and track their progress. This is a great option for anyone new to physical therapy. Feedback is important to ensure that you are aware of how your body moves, postures and forms when performing exercises.

We have been providing outpatient physical therapy for over a decade and we treat each patient individually. We treat them as individuals, so the best treatment doesn’t come in a one-size-fits-all approach.

Both are possible.

Where does in-home physical therapy fit into treatment?

Many of our patients visit us for orthopedic rehabilitation. This is the part of physical therapy that addresses musculoskeletal pain, which includes bones, muscles and joints.

Trauma and degeneration in the musculoskeletal systems can cause extreme pain. It can lead to loss of function in these vital body parts.

Overuse and overexertion can also cause pain. Ask your weekend warrior friends if they push their limits in athletic exercise, and you will find injuries.

A large portion of the pain we treat at our centers is related to musculoskeletal joints.

  • Neck
  • Shoulder
  • Wrist
  • Hand
  • Low back
  • Hip
  • Knee

Other than injury and overuse injuries, repetitive stressors like typing, lifting and bending can cause joint pain.

We treat most cases in-center with manual or hands-on therapy techniques and customized exercises for your injury or condition.

However, there is an aspect to joint-related conditions that combines in-center and at-home physical therapy.

Surgery can either reduce or eliminate the pain completely.

However, it is not a miracle cure. Anyone who has had a hip or knee replacement will tell you.

Surgery can be disruptive for the body.

The pain after surgery is real.

It is also known as post-operative pain. It will take time for the surgical site, surrounding ligaments, and the new joint to adjust to movement. This can make it very difficult.

Post-surgery, physical therapy rehabilitation will assist with pain relief and function recovery.

When a clinical therapist is present, these are the best times to begin recovery at home.

Therapy exercises can be done in the privacy of your own home to help you get rid of muscle and joint stiffness. To continue on the road to full recovery, we encourage patients to return to our centers for individual sessions.

Nearly 8 out 10 patients in our physical therapy programs participate in therapy prior to and after joint substitution.

Why not?

Let’s take another look.

Physical therapy can be as effective for post-surgery rehabilitation as it is in preparing for surgery.

It’s also known as “prehab” and is part of joint replacement therapy.

Results of post-operative studies indicate that it leads to better outcomes.

  • Fewer days spent in hospital
  • After discharge, you will have more energy to do physical exercise
  • Before you have surgery, familiarize yourself with the equipment that will be used during your recovery

In-home physical therapy is possible for many reasons.

Travel, injury, or a weak immune system due to cancer treatments may limit your mobility. Our medical experts are available to assist you in healing and rebuilding strength.

Both in-home as well as in-center treatment options offer benefits. Both options may be considered during an initial evaluation. Combining both may be a good option.
